Myford Super 7B Lathe

Without a doubt, this is my favourite machine. For a good many years, Myford have made the archetypal model engineer's lathe. It may not actually be the best even though it is probably the most expensive. It is, however, almost certainly the most versatile. The reason for that is simply the number of them that have been used, modified and added to over the years.

The Myford lathe has been put to every imaginable use and for many users, it is their only machine tool. My example was purchased a couple of years back when it was already about 30 years old. while it has a certain amount of inevitable wear and the paintwork is a bit tatty, it is still in very good mechanical condition and is more than capable of producing much better work than my meagre skills allow.

The addition of the gearbox to the Super 7 really makes life so much easier. Instantly selectable screw cutting and fine feeds avoid al lthat messing about with changewheels. The only real disadvantage is that metric pitches are only available by adding gears to a quadrant. If I needed metric pitches as well as imperial a lot then I would be better off without the gearbox. As it is, I am very happy with the machine just as it is.
